Launching a Business: Day 2 and 3 a story of truth

This blog post is part of series I'll be writing over the next 7 days to chronicle the launch of our new business, Savvy Kids Consignment Sales. I realized tonight that I just won't have the time to catch up on writing two blog posts, so you get the benefit of two in one. By now if you've kept up since day 7 you know that this isn't the first business I've owned. With each success and failure comes a set of lessons. I thought it prudent to write them down lest I forget.   1. Think Ahead Know what you're getting yourself into. Do your research. It's important to understand...

Lauching a business: Day 4 We Have Technical Difficulties

This blog post is part of series I'll be writing over the next 7 days to chronicle the launch of our new business, Savvy Kids Consignment Sales. This: http://bjstrawter.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2F Yes that stupid URL / web address gave me more trouble than I've had in a longtime. Short story long, anytime I wanted to log into my blog it looked like this: "Page Not Found".  These things are not supposed to happen to me. I use WordPress every day. I'm  on the planning committee for the WordPress conference in Detroit for goodness sake. And to make matters...

Launching a business: Day 5 – What did I get myself in to?

This blog post is part of series I'll be writing over the next 7 days to chronicle the launch of our new business, Savvy Kids Consignment Sales. Time is a funny thing. It can be your best friend or your worst enemy. When you don't need it, you have more time than you know what to with. With you want it, you can never find enough of it. It's easy to take time for granted. Especially when you fall into the category of having more than you need. Jennifer and I did all the right things. We started planning for this sale back in February/March of this year. Research this, price out that. We even...

Launching a Business: Day 6 and still breathing

This blog post is part of series I'll be writing over the next 7 days to chronicle the launch of our new business, Savvy Kids Consignment Sales. Made it through Day 6 unscathed. A little bloodied and bruised, but definitely still kicking. This business launch is so different from Jennifer's last business, in that, the children's resale shop was established with a nice base of clientele. All we had to do was sign the papers. With Savvy Kids, we've taken a Mom to Mom sale, something that's been done the same way forever, and tried to re-imagine it. Of course the idea of a kids consignment...

Launching a Business: Day 7 and counting

Day 7  This blog post is part of series I'll be writing over the next 7 days to chronicle the launch of our new business, Savvy Kids Consignment Sales. So today started a bit rough. Wanted to get up at 5:30 am to get the day going but was hampered by a warm bed and cool pillow. I imagine going to be at 1 am didn't help my cause either. Part of the downside to working in digital marketing is the sense that I'm always on the clock. Last night was no different. Hence the 1 am bedtime. (Note to self, go to bed earlier, according to your wife, you are a much more productive likable member...

Is it important to have a website in todays marketing?

Yep. Real question. They say there are no such thing as stupid questions.  Maybe silly, but not stupid.  If you've been in business for any amount of time and find yourself asking the above question you might be behind the eight ball. Your website is the online business card for your company, brand, self, all of the above.  Today's web savvy consumer spends an average of 32 hours per month online. Online at one time was a destination. Now it's an active part of how we research purchases, hotels, and vacations. It's how we connect with friends, past and present. If your biz hasn't...

It’s just not worth it

Having Google ads on your business blog is just not worth it my friend. I tell you this from experience. In a former life I owned/operated/designed a site called PGSTools.com or as my mother in law would call it PG Stools. The importance of choosing the right name for your business We were an online supplier of cutting tools for the manufacturing industry, ranking number one for our key words and advertising on Google. After analyzing how people navigated our site, I realized we had a large number of visitors coming to the site for information only.  Since we had integrated Google...

Doing Business As. Lets Get that DBA shall we.

I don't know as much as I thought I did. I say that a lot. It's humbling, and reminds me to never stop learning. A sole proprietor recently asked me how to get a DBA (short for Doing Business As) in the great State of Michigan. I sent them to the Michigan Business One Stop Website. I was wrong.  I should have sent them to their respective county.  I share, so you can save time. Here ya go: How to get a DBA in Michigan DBA's are handled by county in the State of Michigan. Some offer online registration. Most require you to either mail or file in person. For those of you in Metro Detroit,...
